The FireWISE project addresses the challenges of knowledge management in firefighting, where rapid and informed decision-making can save lives. With the increasing adoption of advanced technologies such as drones, ground robots, and sensors, firefighters must efficiently navigate broad, complex data to optimise operations.
FireWISE is developing an AI-powered knowledge management system that enables firefighters to access relevant information. Using concepts from machine learning and semantic technologies, the system integrates and organises knowledge in formats comprehendible by both humans and machines. It supports operational management, enhances situational awareness, and enables effective technology utilisation.
Recognizing that user acceptance is critical, FireWISE incorporates socio-scientific analysis to align the system with the cultural and operational practices of Austrian fire brigades, which are predominantly volunteer-driven.
Currently in progress, FireWISE has started developing a domain data model and user interface prototype. The expected results include optimised knowledge sharing, improved resource allocation, and enhanced operational outcomes for fire brigades.
FireWISE is an Austrian research project funded in the FFG KIRAS programme by the Austrian Ministry of Finance.
