CLIMAAX (CLIMAte risk and vulnerability Assessment framework and toolboX) is a 4-year Horizon Europe project that will provide financial, analytical, and practical support to improve regional climate and emergency risk management plans.
CLIMAAX is designed to contribute to the harmonization and consolidation of the practice of climate risk assessment, leaving a legacy for upcoming European initiatives.
The European mission on Adaptation to Climate Change has funded a number of research projects that will support European regions to improve their climate resilience and civil protection preparedness. In this portfolio the CLIMAAX project will support European regions by offering a customized framework and toolbox for climate risk assessment, and provide financial assistance to the regions to carry out a tailormade climate risk assessment in order to empowering take appropriate action action.
The European landscape of disaster risk management and climate adaptation is far from uniform. At the regional a wide variety exists in past experience with climate risks, arrangements for climate adaptation, preparedness of the civil protection, and future challenges.
CLIMAAX builds upon existing risk assessment frameworks, methods and tools, and promotes the use of datasets and service platforms for local and regional scale deployment. It will develop a robust and coordinated framework of consistent, harmonized and comparable risk assessments.
The project brings the existing tools and services beyond state-of-the-art by prioritizing the further development of accessibility, guidance, tuning to local contexts, interpretation and uptake by representative Disaster Risk Management and Civil Protection authorities.
The project is currently preparing the launch for a call for applications for regions to receive financial support to execute a Climate Risk Assessment. A toolbox is being compiled and tested in a number of pilot regions, collecting information that will be included in the first call for financial support for third parties (FSTP), which will open October 2023. A second call will follow early 2024.
In addition, regions and communities are invited to share their experiences with climate risk assessment with us in a call for evidence. This will help the development of a risk assessment framework that is tuned to application at the regional level, based on locally available information, needs and experience.
