COLLARIS & COVALEX co-host webinar on UAV flights during crisis operations

By project COLLARIS Network staffPublished on

In line with the general objectives of the UCPKN, COLLARIS and COVALEX have been working together to enable collaboration and the sharing of knowledge within their respective fields of expertise. On December 14, 2023, the two projects will host a webinar focusing on flying multiple UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles, such as drones) during complex crisis operations (e.g., floods). Everyone interested is welcome to join at the meeting link below.

Air operations are becoming more complex

With the growing use of UAVs during emergencies, future air operations over an area of crisis will become increasingly complex. As UAV flights are performed rapidly and simultaneously by multiple institutions, ensuring safety and good coordination represents a challenge. An additional level of complexity is added by flights of human-operated aircraft. Typically, human-operated aircraft and UAV flights are not run at the same time. The webinar will be focused on ways and means of changing that situation in order to enable safe and effectively coordinated flights by both types of aviation during crisis operations.

Experts from the Crisis Information Centre (Poland)

Two experts from Poland will share their knowledge and answer questions during the webinar: Jakub Ryzenko – Head of the Crisis Information Centre (CIK, part of the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences), specialist in space policy, international cooperation in space activities, and the use of satellite techniques in the area of security and systems engineering, and Emil Wrzosek – Crisis management specialist at Crisis Information Centre (CIK, part of the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences), expert on planning and conducting simulation games, exercises and trainings.

How to take part

The webinar will be taking place between 3 and 4.30 pm. You can join via clicking the link below:

About COLLARIS

COLLARIS (COLLaborative network on unmanned AeRIal Systems) is a capacity-building initiative to develop a sustainable European network of scientific, engineering, and end-user expertise related to unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in civil protection and disaster response. COLLARIS will offer a networking platform as part of the Union Civil Protection Knowledge Network for information exchange and experimentation with advanced concepts of UAS for disaster response and crisis management. These activities are accompanied by thematic workshops, webinars, and moderated discussions as well as trials and embedded first responder trainings, aimed at increasing the efficiency of UAS operations by bringing knowledge closer to operational use.

About COVALEX

COVALEX (Community of Valued Experts in Hydrometeorological and Technological Multi-Hazards) is an EU-funded project that aims to create a community of experts in hydrometeorological and technological hazards (thunderstorms, heavy snowfall, droughts, hot and cold spells etc.). The goal of COVALEX is to compile and make use of different experiences, geographical locations, and networks, and to promote prevention, preparation, and testing processes. The project brings together key stakeholders involved in risk and disaster governance: academics, practitioners, and policy makers. It creates a network that works together in a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral manner and applies scientific knowledge to disaster risk management.
