Daily Map | Italy floods and landslides
After heavy rainfalls in northern Italy, this map shows the subsequent floods and landslides as well as the UCPM response.
From 16 to 20 May 2023 the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy was affected by heavy rainfall which caused severe floods with rivers overflowing and several landslides. As of 22 May, 14 fatalities have been registered and over 36,000 people were evacuated.
Italy activated the UCPM on 20 May, requesting assistance for high capacity pumping modules with equipment. Two modules from Slovakia and Slovenia are currently on site. Additional offers came from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Poland and Romania. One ERCC Liason Officer is also supporting the UCPM operations on the ground.
Rapid mapping through the Copernicus Emergency Management Service was already activated for the affected area on 16 May. Eight maps have been produced so far to aid the operations on the ground. These maps show, for example, flooded areas and damaged infrastructure, such as roads and buildings.
Daily maps provide an overview of a significant event or situation on a daily basis. Monitoring events around the globe 24/7, the ERCC produces informative geospatial maps as part of its response to disasters.
