EMS in Conflits | KnowEMS Webinar Highlights

By project KnowEMS staffPublished on

In a KnownEMS webinar held on the first of October, experts from the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) and Magen David Adom (MDA) shared their experiences managing operations in conflict settings. The speakers at this event were Varava Yevhen, ; Chaim Rafalowski, and Alin Suciu.

Multi-hazard

Key Issues Discussed

  1. Revising Standard Operating Procedures (SoP): Current SoPs are inadequate for active conflict responses, necessitating a review of the "safety first" concept.
  2. Response Dynamics: The nature of conflict responses, including the duration and resources required, differs significantly from standard emergencies.
  3. Tactical Response: Civilian responders often lack the training and resources needed for tactical responses used in military settings.
  4. Treatment Protocols: The use of tourniquets in conflict scenarios is critical and should be included in training.
  5. Extended Response: Aid efforts extend beyond immediate First Aid, continuing for hours after an attack.
  6. Coordination with Authorities: Effective response requires coordination with authorities, especially when involving civilians.
  7. Responder Well-being: The needs of responders, who are also affected by the conflict, must be addressed.
  8. Training Programs: There is a need for specialized training programs, including emotional support for responders.
  9. Peer Support: Peer support is crucial, as individuals benefit from sharing experiences with those who understand their challenges.

This webinar underscored the importance of adaptive strategies and comprehensive training to manage emergency responses effectively in conflict zones.
