The FORMATEX23 exercise has concluded in the city of Linz. Initiated by the Upper Austrian Firefighting Association and backed by the Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, this initiative addressed the challenges posed by natural hazards leading to technological accidents (NATECH).
The main simulation focused on sustained rainfalls causing significant flooding in the Danube River's cross-border region between Austria and Germany.
After the simulated waters rose and environmental threats materialised, the virtual scenario portrayed the flooding of industrial zones and harbours in Linz, leading to subsequent chemical, biological, and radiological repercussions. The Enns Harbour on the Danube was a central focus, serving as the epicentre for a simulated contamination crisis.
Since various national and international emergency organisations and authorities at all levels are involved in this project, one of the most important points is mutual understanding and cooperation.
Mag. Gottfried Kerschbaummayr, Head of the Upper Austrian Firefighting College and the FORMATEX23 Exercise Director, highlighted mutual understanding and cooperation as the bedrock of this initiative. “Since various national and international emergency organisations and authorities at all levels are involved in this project, one of the most important points is mutual understanding and cooperation. Through targeted cooperation, the various EU modules are familiarised, and mutual acceptance is sharpened.” The exercise, in many respects, is not solely about crisis management but setting the groundwork for future European collaborations.
FORMATEX23 facilitates collaboration among different countries and agencies, emphasising preparedness for incidents where natural and technological hazards intersect.
