IMAROS Project Status Update

By project IMAROS 2 staffPublished on

The IMAROS project, dedicated to improving maritime response to low-sulphur oil spills, has made significant progress recently. Here is an update on the latest activities and achievements within the project.

Progress in Testing and Collaboration

The first round of testing with equipment suppliers took place in Horten during the autumn of 2024. This initial testing phase focused on evaluating the capabilities of different technologies in handling low-sulphur oil spills. Following this, the second round of testing was conducted under icy conditions in Finland during week 7 of 2025. These tests are crucial to understanding the performance of response technologies in diverse environments.

Advances in Work Packages

Notably, the first results have emerged from Work Package 3 (WP3), including the chemical characterization and fingerprinting of low-sulphur oil. These findings are essential for identifying and categorizing the oil types involved in spills, which in turn aids in developing effective response strategies.

The project’s Expert Group has also held its second meeting, bringing together specialists to discuss progress and future steps. Additionally, work continues across all other Work Packages, ensuring comprehensive development and integration of solutions.

Final Conference: Save the Date

We are pleased to announce that the final conference for the IMAROS project will take place on November 18-19, 2025. The event will be held in Malta and will also be available as a hybrid conference, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation. Please save the date and stay tuned for more details.

The IMAROS team remains committed to advancing oil spill response capabilities through continuous testing, research, and collaboration. We look forward to sharing more insights and outcomes as the project progresses.
