On October 10, we presented the FIREPRIME project to the residents of La Floresta and Sol i Aire neighbourhoods of Sant Cugat (Barcelona). Both neighbourhoods, located in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area in the Serra de Collserola, will be the scene of one of the FIREPRIME pilot tests along with the tests that will be carried out in Austrian Tyrol and Gothenburg (Sweden). FIREPRIME is a DG-ECHO-funded project.
The La Floresta and Sol i Aire pilot test will serve to analyse the vulnerability to wildfires of homes and neighbourhoods, and thus propose strategies and actions to reduce the fire risk and create a culture of prevention and adaptation to the risk of wildfire. The pilot test will also serve to contribute to the development and improvement of the FIREPRIME app, which will allow residents to evaluate the vulnerabilities of their homes and thus have recommendations and solutions to improve their safety.
The implementation of the pilot test will be carried out with all the key actors in the management of wildfire emergencies, from a community work approach. In this sense, we have the collaboration of the Sant Cugat City Council, Firefighters of Generalitat of Catalonia, Civil Protection, the Forest Defense Group (ADF) of Sant Cugat, the Collserola Natural Park and neighbourhood associations.
The pilot test also plans to carry out education and awareness activities on the need to adopt a risk culture. To this end, we met on November 5 with the Education Commission of La Floresta neighbourhood to implement an educational project adapted to the reality of these neighbourhoods that raises awareness among the youngest about wildfires, the possibility of managing the risk of fire through prevention and the need to live with fire.
During the first half of 2025 we hope to be able to work on these activities with children, teenagers and residents of Sant Cugat, while promoting ,community leadership.
