The blast, caused by the ignition of ammonium nitrate stored improperly at the port, resulted in the loss of more than 200 lives and left thousands more injured. The impact of this tragedy, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, lingers as a painful memory for the people of Lebanon.
In the aftermath of the blast, the European Union (EU) swiftly stepped up to provide crucial assistance. The UCPM played a vital role in mobilising emergency support for Lebanon, with twenty Member/Participating States sending skilled professionals, including search and rescue, medical, and chemical assessment teams, to aid in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
Moreover, the EU offered substantial humanitarian aid, rapidly mobilising 32.2 million euro to provide immediate relief and essential assistance.
