World Tsunami Awareness Day
5 November marked the World Tsunami Awareness Day. A special map displays DG ECHO and JRC contribution to Tsunami Early Warning System.
On 5 November, we celebrated the World Tsunami Awareness Day. To mark the occasion, the ERCC published a situation map illustrating the contributions from DG ECHO and the JRC with regard to tsunami preparedness across the Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean and connected seas region (NEAM). In a broad sense, tsunami preparedness involves hazard assessment, early warning systems (in the form of installed devices, in which Indonesia is here included), public awareness, and early action.
The situation map displays information on the exact location of devices installed by the European Commission: there are 51 installed Inexpensive Devices for Sea-Level Measurement (IDSL), 7 Installed Tsunami Alerting Devices (TAD) as well as other sea-level measurement instruments. One can also observe the probabilistic tsunami hazard calculated along the 50m bathymetry.
The map issued by the ERCC also provides information on CoastWAVE – a UNESCO project funded by DG ECHO designed to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities in the NEAM region to tsunamis and other sea level-related hazards. At the end of the project (first semester of 2024), the selected communities will have improved their understanding of tsunami and sea-level related risks, developed their communication strategies to govern sea-level related risks, and be recognized as Tsunami Ready communities. More information on the project can be found here.
