Description
Tasks of the Armed Forces
The Federal Army is the armed force of the Republic of Austria. Its diverse tasks are derived primarily from the Military Act. In addition, it is becoming increasingly important in this context that Austria is a member of the European Union and the Partnership for Peace (PfP).
The main tasks of the Federal Armed Forces are:
Military National Defense
National defence is the core task of the Federal Armed Forces.
In the event of aggression from outside or in the event of an attack on Austrian territory, the combat troops of the Federal Army are ready.
Military national defence continues to be the core competence of the land and air forces as well as the special operations forces. In the event of an emergency, the combat units can react quickly and, if necessary, be strengthened after a short reaction time by other troops, including soldiers of the militia.
Protection of residents and facilities
During an exercise, a soldier guards the Danube power plant Melk.
If necessary, soldiers of the Federal Armed Forces help to maintain order and security in Austria. It is conceivable that army forces will protect the constitutional institutions of our country (such as government, parliament, state parliaments or district authorities) and thus secure the democratic freedoms of citizens.
However, because such operations in Germany are basically the task of the executive, soldiers may only take on these assistance tasks at the request of the Ministry of the Interior.
Assistance in the event of natural disasters or accidents
Soldiers in action against floods.
In the event of natural disasters, so-called natural disasters, and accidents of exceptional proportions, the helpers of the Federal Armed Forces are on hand.
Whether flood relief, extinguishing flights in the event of forest fires, large-scale snow removal, search for avalanche victims or forest work for storm damage - there is a lot to do for the emergency services at any time of the year.
