Description

The basic purpose of the BM National Directorate-General for Disaster Management is to protect the life and property safety of the Hungarian population, the safe operation of the national economy and critical infrastructure elements, which is an extremely important public safety task. The BM OKF is a law enforcement agency with national competence.

Its main task is the official prevention of disasters; carrying out rescue in the event of civil emergencies that occur; organization and management of defense; elimination of adverse consequences; implementation of restoration-reconstruction.

In order to fulfil its function:

  • It exercises a wide range of industrial safety, fire protection, civil protection, water and water protection authority powers: prescribe, permit, prohibit, restrict, control and apply sanctions. Coordinates the activities of other authorities to prevent emergencies.
  • It has national, county, regional and local professional organizations, voluntary and involved obligated civil protection bodies, a significant equipment park, and an appropriate logistical background. It operates a business company that manufactures and repairs special equipment and has nationwide coverage. It carries out investment organization and property management.
  • It exercises important powers in the identification and supervision of critical infrastructures in Hungary, as well as in civil emergency planning, defense administration, mobilization of the national economy, and state reserve management.
  • It regulates, manages and fully supervises the fire protection system, and its local emergency services perform firefighting and technical rescue tasks, protection, information and alarm of the population. He directs the participation of municipal, facility fire brigades and involved volunteer associations in firefighting and technical rescue. The deployment management shall be carried out within the framework of the single emergency call system.
  • It maintains wide-ranging international relations on the basis of bilateral intergovernmental agreements, represents Hungary in the professional organizations of the UN OCHA, the EU, NATO, the international fire brigade association, the international organization of fire officers.
  • It maintains the area training bases, the Disaster Management Education Center, the Disaster Management Institute of the National University of Public Service, the Central Orchestra of Disaster Management, the Disaster Management Museum and the Disaster Management Research Institute. He publishes monthly newspapers, professional journals, publications, teaching materials, organizes science, operates a sports club.
  • It maintains modern telecommunications, deployment management, IT, as well as nationwide, measuring, sensing, population alarm systems.
  • It cooperates with law enforcement agencies, the military, municipalities, authorities serving security.
  • It maintains relations with NGOs and charitable organizations, their associations, educational and scientific institutions, and the Hungarian media.
