PPRD East 2 programme

The regional civil protection programme for Prevention, Preparedness and Response to natural and man-made disasters in the Eastern Partnership countries (PPRD East) was initiated in 2010 under the EU Eastern Partnership initiative.

Description

The overall objective of the second phase of PPRD East programme was to strengthen the Eastern Partnership countries resilience, preparedness and response to man-made disasters and disasters caused by natural hazards. The main beneficiaries of this action were: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

Based on the results of the PPRD East 1 programme, the purpose of the PPRD East 2 was:

  • to strengthen Partner Countries’ civil protection capacities for disaster prevention, preparedness and response,
  • to strengthen regional cooperation and bringing the Partner Countries progressively closer to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The programme focused on:

  • improving the institutional and legal framework on disaster management and prevention, in live with EU acquis and best practices,
  • strengthening cooperation between Partner Countries and EU Civil Protection Mechanism through regular exchanges of information, expertise and best practices, trainings, table-top exercises and a joint regional exercise,
  • further developing and operationalisation of the Electronic Regional Risk Atlas,
  • raising awareness about disasters (natural and man-made), their prevention and response amongst civil protection professionals, volunteers and within the population in general.
