The Interrelationship Between The BE-READY Project and PROMPT Project
BE-READY and PROMPT projects are quite interrelated and both are funded by the European Union under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism Program.
Best Rapid Environmental Assessment Decision sYstem-(BE-READY) was an EU-funded project between 2020 to 2022, under the call of prevention and preparedness projects for civil protection and marine pollution. BE-READY was designed to enhance the mitigation of marine pollution in the EU Mediterranean Sea and neighboring countries. The marine environment is continuously and increasingly threatened by pollution derived from maritime accidents that frequently cause spills of dangerous substances. Sufficient work has been devoted to endowing the EU-Member States with common protocols, action plans, and operational tools regarding oil or HNS spills. There has not been a unified platform that covers the Oil and HNS spills, and that was the gap that the BE-READY project aimed to bridge by implementing an Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS), that is easily exportable to different geographical contexts, which models the most common sources of pollution.
In a quest to advance the concept of BE-READY gave birth to the PROMPT project which is geared towards expounding the features of the EDSS developed under BE-READY, establishing containers detecting system through satellite images, advancing the skills of the end-users, and enhancing the engagement of relevant stakeholders for exploitation of the project’s results and outcomes. PROMPT seeks to realize this goal by modeling the harbour and coastal circulation in the proximity of the Genoa harbour, one of the biggest ports of the Mediterranean Sea, which lay close to highly sensitive environmental areas; (2) model the dispersion of volatile substances related to oil and hazardous-noxious-substances spills in the harbour of Tripoli and Aqaba; (3) develop an algorithm for automatically detect oil spills from satellite images to provide to the decision support system localisation of the area interested by the spills; (4) develop an innovative algorithm able to track lost container in the sea; (5) and to train and transfer the knowledge that resides in the development of decision support system tool to the local operators of partners belonging to the European Neighbourhood Policy countries (Lebanon and Jordan).
In conclusion, BE-READY and PROMPT projects are quite interrelated and both are funded by the European Union under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism Program. PROMPT which is an extension of BE-READY is designed to advance the features of the EDSS developed under BE-READY, establishing containers detecting system through satellite, advancing the skills of the end-users, and enhancing engagement of relevant stakeholders for exploitation of the project’s results and outcomes. Both projects are geared toward fighting marine pollution caused by spills of oil or HNS onto the waters of the EU Mediterranean Sea and neighboring countries through maritime transportation activities. The end goal of both projects is to safeguard and preserve the biodiversity of the intervention areas.
