Description

Rationale
Disasters are becoming increasingly complex with impacts affecting all aspects of society. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent 2021 and 2024 floods which devastated Central and Eastern Europe, have highlighted increased transboundary vulnerabilities and a changing risk landscape. As such, this increase in transnational complexity has introduced new challenges that call for the development of new innovative approaches to address these issues. In such a multifaceted environment, it is essential to review strengths and limitations of both single and multi-hazard approaches from a scientific, operational and communication perspective.

What do we offer?
The EUMA Winter School at the University of Bonn offers an excellent opportunity to engage and deepen your understanding of challenges of disaster risk management and civil protection systems through a European lens.

Participants will engage with leading experts in the field through keynote speeches, presentations, panel discussions and social events, fostering an interactive and stimulating environment for exchange and discussions between participants. The Winter School provides unique hands-on learning experiences through diverse exercises in multi-hazards and serious games and visits to key institutions such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and the German Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction (DKKV). An excursion to the Ahr Valley, a region severely impacted by the devastating 2021 flood with 135 casualties, will allow participants to get insights into disaster impacts and recovery and to meet the district administrator. Also, a concurrent visit to the Federal Academy for Civil Protection and Civil Defence (BABZ) is planned.

Information & Contact
The participation fee is 100 € per person, covering excursions, two social dinners, light snacks, and lunch.
• Travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the participants.
