Description
This session will discuss the still rudimentary protection for persons with disabilities in the event of disasters. Using the COVID 19 pandemic as a case study we will discuss the lack of attention to the needs of disabled persons in an actual disaster and the consequences of this neglect.
The session is focussed on the development of legal protections including customary international law, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the proposed treaty on the protection of persons in the event of disasters. The session will end with specific recommendations for reform of legal protections and actual practical suggestions for including disabled persons in the conversation.
This seminar is the final session of the UK Alliance for Disaster Research (UKADR) webinar series entitled Underrepresented Topics in Disaster Education. This series accounts for those areas of disaster research currently being removed from curriculum globally and/or which have been underrepresented in higher education teaching.
