Description
SUNSHINE is an EU-funded project coordinated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS). It aims to strengthen disaster resilience across Europe by facilitating the uptake of EU Space Programme data and services - such as Copernicus EMS, Galileo EWSS, SSA, and GOVSATCOM - within civil protection frameworks, supporting the objectives of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
As part of its capacity-building activities, the SUNSHINE project is organising a full-day online technical training webinar on 20 January 2026, from 09:30 to 17:00 CET. The webinar will combine project-level context with hands-on technical training sessions, providing participants with concrete guidance on how to access and use EU Space services for disaster preparedness, early warning, response and recovery.
The morning sessions will begin with a short introduction to the SUNSHINE project, including its objectives, scope and training approach. This will be followed by technical training modules focusing on Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), with particular attention to the European Drought Observatory (EDO) and the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL). These sessions will demonstrate how CEMS products can support situational awareness, risk monitoring and impact assessment.
The afternoon sessions will focus on Galileo-based services, including the Emergency Warning Satellite Service (EWSS), Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA) and the Search and Rescue (SAR). Participants will gain an overview of these services and their relevance for civil protection operations.
Throughout the day, the webinar will adopt an interactive format. Training sessions will include demonstrations, real-time screen sharing of operational portals, quizzes, and guided exercises, allowing participants to familiarise themselves with data access procedures and explore datasets directly. Dedicated Q&A moments will enable direct interaction with experts and trainers.
Who Should Attend
The webinar is open to all those wishing to learn more about the project and its capacity-building activities. Participation is particularly recommended for professionals from the following groups:
- Civil protection authorities and emergency response coordinators at national, regional, or local level
- Technical emergency teams and first responders
- National Training Coordinators under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)
- Policy-makers, trainers, and scientific/technical advisors with an interest in disaster preparedness and early warning systems
- Representatives from academic or research institutions in relevant fields
- Media representatives covering emergency response and disaster management
