SUNSHINE is an EU-funded project coordinated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS). It aims to strengthen disaster resilience across Europe by facilitating the uptake of EU Space Programme data and services - such as Copernicus EMS, Galileo EWSS, SSA, and GOVSATCOM - within civil protection frameworks, supporting the objectives of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).

As part of its capacity-building activities, the SUNSHINE project is organising a half-day online technical webinar on 10 September 2026, from 09:30 to 12:45 CEST. The webinar will combine project-level context with hands-on technical training sessions, providing participants with concrete guidance on how to access and use EU Space services for disaster preparedness, early warning, response, and recovery.

This technical webinar will explore how Secure Satellite Communications (SATCOM) and Space Situational Awareness (SSA) services can support civil protection and disaster management. Participants will gain an overview of the purpose, capabilities and operational applications of GOVSATCOM, discover the future potential of IRIS² for resilient communications, and learn how SSA contributes to monitoring and assessing threats originating from space. 

Training sessions will include use cases, screen sharing of operational portals, and quizzes, allowing participants to familiarise themselves with data access procedures. Dedicated Q&A moments will enable direct interaction with experts and trainers.

Who Should Attend

The webinar is open to all those wishing to learn more about the project and its capacity-building activities. Participation is particularly recommended for professionals from the following groups:

• Civil protection authorities and emergency response coordinators at national, regional, or local level
• Technical emergency teams and first responders
• National Training Coordinators under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)
• Policy-makers, trainers, and scientific/technical advisors with an interest in disaster preparedness and early warning systems
• Representatives from academic or research institutions in relevant fields
• Media representatives covering emergency response and disaster management
