UfM regional dialogue platform on civil protection

The first meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Regional Dialogue Platform on Civil Protection takes place on 12 December 2022, chaired by the UfM Co-Presidency and the European Commission (ECHO).

This is building on the Paris Declaration of the 13 July 2008, the 2017 UfM Roadmap, the third UfM Civil Protection Directors-General Meeting in 2019 and the renewed priorities for the UfM of 2020, which stressed that: “The UfM Platform on Civil Protection should play a key role in the discussion of the common challenges and the concrete actions to develop, within the Civil Protection Action Plan, strengthened Euro-Mediterranean cooperation on prevention campaigns, emergency response and crisis management”.

This first meeting of the UfM regional dialogue platform takes place in a post-pandemic and climate change context. It follows the relaunch of the UfM civil protection cooperation process via the meeting of the UfM Directors-General in February 2019, whose follow-up enabled the initiation and completion of three working groups on preparing for efficient mutual assistance in the Euro-Mediterranean area, engaging citizens in disaster risk management and the role of volunteers in civil protection.

The Regional Dialogue Platform on Civil Protection will provide the space for exchanges of views, concrete discussions and growth of ideas towards mutual cooperation in this field on connection, interface and complementarity with the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
