Workshop: Building resilience across borders
The next workshop on ‘Building resilience across borders' during EU Week of regions and cities will take place on 11 October 2023.
Disasters defy administrative borders and thus call for cross-border approaches to risk management. This has never been more evident than in recent years which have seen a number of large-scale emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the extreme floods and wildfires fuelled by climate change, or the wide-ranging repercussions stemming from the Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. The experience has also shown that in times of disaster, border regions often face particular challenges, be they linked to cross-border movement restrictions during a health crisis or a sudden influx of refugees from a conflict zone across the border. What happens in border regions matters, as nearly 40% of the EU residents live in border areas.
The objective of this workshop is to discuss how border regions could strengthen their disaster resilience and be better prepared to face future challenges posed by the evolving risk landscape. The starting point of this discussion will be initial findings of a new study launched by the European Commission on ‘Strengthening the resilience of EU border regions: mapping risks and crisis management tools and identifying gaps’. The workshop will give an overview of the key gaps identified in cross-border risk management in the EU and discuss ways of addressing them. The discussion will be supported by good practice testimonials. The workshop will cover such issues as cross-border risk assessment, risk governance, crisis and risk management tools.
The workshop is part of this year’s European Week of Regions and Cities.
