At its core, the Atlas (produced by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre) showcases how the scientists behind the Global Human Settlement Layer transform free and open data and geo-information offered by the European Union through the Copernicus Space Programme into understanding the dynamic interplay between human populations and the natural environment. This work examines ways in which human settlements interact with landscapes and ecosystems upon which we rely. Through maps, charts and storylines, the publication provides a compelling, evidence-based exploration of the multi-sectoral implications of human development and urbanisation for our planet.
