After severe and prolonged droughts that affected northern Africa during the last six years and Europe for over two years, drought conditions are back again in large parts of Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean region, eastern Europe and the Baltic countries, the JRC points out. This new analytical report by the JRC's Global Drought Observatory (GDO) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) looks at indicators such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) up to 18 July 2024. It also considers temperature, soil moisture, vegetation, large scale atmospheric conditions, fire danger, and seasonal forecasts. Finally, it looks at reported impacts of the above.
