In September, floods swept through parts of Europe, catching many off guard with their devastating impact. However, according to this Reuters article, the intense rainfall itself should not have been unexpected. Advanced forecasting systems, enhanced by artificial intelligence, had predicted the downpour. Yet, being forewarned did not translate into effective preparedness, it points out.
After the floods, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, emphasised that this was no isolated event. He remarked: "Extreme weather occurrences that were once considered rare are now becoming almost annual". "The global climate crisis has become a daily reality for Europeans", Lenarčič added. AI aids in forecasting but challenges in flood warnings remain, as noted in the Reuters article.
