Course “Volcanic Risk Assessment and Management: Introduction to VOLCANBOX”

By project VOLCAN staffPublished on

NRAMS, in collaboration with the National University of Costa Rica (UNA), the School of Geographical Sciences (ECG-UNA), and the University of Costa Rica (UCR), co-organizes the first international course “Volcanic Risk Assessment and Management: Introduction to VOLCANBOX.” The course will take place from 20 to 24 April 2026 at UNA, Heredia (Costa Rica).

The teaching team is composed of Dr. Daniela Campos Durán (UNA), Dr. Joan Martí Molist (NRAMS), and Dr. Guillermo Alvarado Induni (UCR). The instructors have extensive experience in the field of volcanology, ranging from the scientific analysis of volcanic hazards and risks to the application of management tools. The course is designed to combine theory and practice and includes field trips to Poás and Irazú volcanoes. In addition, one of the main objectives is the presentation and training in the use of the VolcanBox software tool, developed by NRAMS, which enables a comprehensive analysis of volcanic hazard and risk in a given region. The total course fee is USD 165, which includes a certificate of attendance, use of computer equipment for practical classroom exercises, fieldwork materials, and transportation during field activities. This is a unique opportunity to enhance both theoretical and practical knowledge across a wide range of aspects related to volcanic risk. The course will provide participants with key tools to better understand this natural process from a geophysical perspective and to manage it effectively in order to reduce disaster risk. If you wish to professionalize in this field, do not miss this experience. We look forward to welcoming you! Pre-register at: https://bit.ly/CursoVolcanUNA
