Drones Delivering AEDs – A Promising Use Case From Sweden

By project COLLARIS2 staffPublished on

COLLARIS2 is all about the optimal use of drones in crisis management and rescue missions, and, thus, also looks at new and promising drone use cases – i.e., not yet well-known ways of using drones and other UAS to save lives. The network has now published its first drone use case on the UCPKN platform, a concise overview about a groundbreaking initiative in Sweden that uses autonomous drones to deliver defibrillators faster than ambulances. Developed through a partnership between Karolinska Institutet, the region of Västra Götaland and technology provider Everdrone, and in close collaboration with Swedish emergency services (SOS Alarm), the project is transforming the response to time-critical medical emergencies.

The AED drone delivery solution autonomously delivers defibrillators to suspected out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases. Integrated into Sweden’s emergency response network in the Västra Götaland region, the system automatically deploys drones from one of six strategically placed launch sites in parallel with ambulance dispatch when a 112 call indicates a cardiac arrest. Within about 15 seconds, the nearest drone is launched, flies autonomously beyond visual line of sight to the location, and safely lowers an AED using a winch. The service currently covers a population of approximately 200,000–250,000 in western Sweden under a long-term public contract with the region.

Find out more about the use case on the COLLARIS2 project website which links to a concise two-page summary about the initiative.

Virtual Booklet On Drone Use Cases

COLLARIS2 will eventually produce a virtual „booklet” with at least 12 drone use cases, aiming to help overcome the lack of sufficient information about operational use cases for drones. The task is part of the project’s work package 3 - support for the uptake of lessons learnt, lead by the Greek Center of Security Studies, KEMEA. Some elements of the use cases may be included in trial scenarios and training materials.

About COLLARIS2

The EU-funded project COLLARIS2 is the successor to COLLARIS (COLLaborative network on unmanned AeRIal Systems) and focuses on the use of UAS (e.g., drones) in the field of civil protection and disaster management. Building upon the results of the COLLARIS Network, this project aims to continue, expand and further develop the already established international network of crisis management and civil protection practitioners, research institutions and public administration. The members of the network collect and transfer knowledge, exchange experiences, skills, good practices and information on operational procedures for the optimal use of drones in crisis management and rescue missions.
