Kids understanding the importance of "preparedness" through hands-on play
As part of the Empower-Citizens project, our partner Cittadinanzattiva APS has designed together with our italian use case Comune di Castelraimondo and its Centro Primavera a dedicated journey of five meet-up events to turn kids' curiosity into active citizenship.
On the 19th March 2026 we carried out the first meet-up with the kids were we had the chance to cover two topics: emergencies as told by adults and learning with a geologist to understand the science behind Castelraimondo's territory. By exploring the Earth’s secrets with Prof. Crocetti (Science Museum – University of Camerino), the children discovered that knowledge is the most powerful tool for transforming fear into prepeardness and resilience.
Key takeaways from this session :
- Understanding the "how" and "why" of earthquakes removes uncertainty—and the fear that comes with it.
- When children have the tools to understand, they aren't afraid—they are ready to act.
- Kids learned that shoring and structural supports on buildings are not symbols of defeat, but of care, protection, and future renewal.
Studying our land is the first step toward facing natural risks with confidence, turning fear into knowledge! A huge thank you to our "little scientists"—their enthusiasm and questions remind us that awareness has no age limit. They were happy to engage, and we are very excited to move toward the next event with them, discussing emergencies within families!
Awareness begins with a question, not fear. By nurturing a child’s natural desire to understand, we replace uncertainty with the power of informed participation. They are not fearful, they just want to comprehend.
