By project SUNSHINE staffPublished on

Are you involved in civil protection or emergency response activities? Would you like to improve how your organisation prepares for and manages disasters using EU Space data and services? The SUNSHINE project is launching a series of training seminars designed to help professionals in this field use EU Space data and services to strengthen disaster resilience across Europe.

What is the SUNSHINE project?

In response to a European Parliament request, and under the coordination of European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), SUNSHINE is an EU-funded project which aims to strengthen disaster resilience across Europe by facilitating the uptake of EU Space Programme data and services within civil protection frameworks, in line with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) EU Disaster Resilience Goals.

The SUNSHINE project directly supports the objectives of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) by promoting the uptake of EU Space data and services - such as Copernicus EMS, Galileo EWSS, SSA, and GOVSATCOM - to strengthen disaster resilience and improve civil protection operations. Through training, technical assistance, exercises, and recommendations, SUNSHINE will improve the understanding of the EU Space services, and will help UCPM stakeholders and civil protection authorities across Member States exploit the full potential of these space-based capacities.

As part of this effort, a series of four multi-day in-person training seminars will be delivered between 2025 and 2026. These seminars are designed to support the operational integration of EU Space-based data and services for disaster risk management, with a particular focus on civil protection stakeholders.

The first of the four seminars will take place from 25 to 28 November 2025 in Tallinn, Estonia.

What will participants learn?

Leveraging a mix of interactive and practical learning methods, including expert-led lectures and presentations, as well as product demonstrations and hands-on tutorials, quizzes, and assignments, the participants will learn:

  • The benefits of EU Space tools for disaster management and risk reduction, and how these support the EU Disaster Resilience Goals
  • How to register for, request, use and benefit from Copernicus Emergency Management Service products
  • How to use new Galileo-based services to deliver targeted emergency warnings
  • Best practices for using EU Space data and services, illustrated through real-world use cases based on past disaster events

Why fill in the survey?

If you work in civil protection, emergency management, or disaster risk reduction, this is your opportunity to boost your skills, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge EU Space tools, and help your organisation lead the way in using advanced technologies for disaster resilience.
