The "Flood North ALB" project, funded by the EU, aims to enhance regional and European coordination in responding to natural disasters, particularly floods, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. A key initiative is the First Planning Conference in Shkodër on May 30-31, focusing on training and informing flood-prone communities. Led by Albania’s National Civil Protection Agency (AKMC), the project involves Balkan, Mediterranean, and EU countries.
Officials, including AKMC Director Haki Çako and Shkodër Prefect Majlinda Angoni, emphasize the importance of cross-border cooperation. As part of the initiative, a study visit was conducted on April 4-5 to assess the region and coordinate the upcoming FSX flood simulation exercise. This visit involved the National Civil Protection Agency, Shkodër Prefecture, Shkodër Municipality, and Albania’s Civil Protection System, alongside Cypriot, Greek, Italian, and Montenegrin partners, as well as the European University of Tirana and the Center for Development and Democratization of Institutions (CDDI).
The project will include theoretical and practical training for local authorities, emergency responders, and volunteers, culminating in a large-scale flood simulation next spring to strengthen disaster response capabilities. Through collaboration and preparedness, this initiative seeks to build a more resilient civil protection system in the region.
