An information meeting was held in Parga, co-organized by the Municipality of Parga, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection and the Institute of Civil Protection of the University of Western Macedonia.
During the meeting, the co-funded European THEMIS program was presented, in which only two municipalities nationwide participate, the Municipality of Parga and the Municipality of Aegina, and focuses on strengthening the resilience of tourist areas against natural disasters and extreme weather phenomena, through information, prevention and utilization of innovative technologies.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Municipal Authority, the Fire Department, the Hotel Industry and Volunteer Groups, from whom opinions and proposals were submitted. Specifically, the Commander of the Parga Fire Department, Mr. Giannos, referred to the joint actions that have been implemented in recent years in collaboration with the Municipality of Parga and the Civil Protection Department, such as the installation of cameras, the opening of a mountain road network and the placement of information signs.
From the Municipality's side, it was pointed out that this summer the area faced many fires, however, the timely detection through the smart camera system and the immediate intervention of the Fire Department contributed to the quick and effective management of the incidents. The excellent cooperation between the Municipality, the Fire Department and volunteer groups, with the Search and Rescue Team as a typical example, was a crucial factor in the successful handling of the incidents.
The Institute of Civil Protection of the University of Western Macedonia, with Professor Ioannis Bakouros as Director and colleagues Ms. Amalia Kouskoura and Ms. Eleni Kalliontzi, thanks all participants and representatives of local bodies, with special mention to the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Mr. Christakis Georgios and the Advisor for Civil Protection, Mr. Spyridon Boboris.
After the analysis of the conclusions of the meeting, a comprehensive and holistic action plan will be developed, which will contribute to the continuous enhancement of the preparedness and safety of citizens and tourists of the Municipality of Parga.
