In recent years, Europe has witnessed a growing number of extreme weather events that have tested the resilience of national authorities and local communities alike. Among these, wildfires have emerged as one of the most destructive and recurring threats, fuelled by rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and shifting climate patterns. The 2025 wildfire season has proven to be one of the most challenging on record, with devastating impacts across Southern, Balkan, and Eastern regions of Europe. Against this backdrop, the European Union has mobilised unprecedented levels of support to assist Member States in mitigating damage, protecting lives and livelihoods, and reinforcing long-term preparedness measures.

This timeline highlights EU preparedness and response measures, including rescEU resources, prepositioned firefighting teams, and coordinated support through the Civil Protection Mechanism.
