ITA EU MODEX 2025
This is the second exercise conducted by LOT 2 MODEX Consortium within Cycle 12.
A large-scale wildfire, covering approximately 5,000 hectares, is rapidly advancing toward the city of Nuoro and the industrial area of Pratosardo. The fire originated in the territory of Oniferi and driven by strong winds and dry conditions, has spread uncontrollably. The current priority for firefighting efforts is to contain the blaze on the southwestern outskirts of Nuoro, where local emergency teams (firefighters & forestry protection) are working to prevent the flames from encroaching on residential areas and critical infrastructure.
The modules from 🇦🇹, 🇧🇬, 🇬🇷, 🇷🇴, 🇸🇮, and 🇸🇰 had to go through the RDC. After completing the procedures, they boarded the ferry. The only way for the modules to reach the wildfire-affected zone is by ferry, with a long and demanding 10-hour journey ahead of them.
Following a long and challenging journey, the modules have finally arrived in Sardinia, reaching the region severely impacted by the devastating wildfires. Their presence marks the beginning of coordinated support efforts in one of the hardest-hit areas. The modules have reached the Base of Operations, where they immediately began setting up their camp in preparation for the missions ahead. While some module members were setting up the BoO, others were fighting to keep the flames under control.
In the face of severe wildfires, intervention teams worked closely to control the flames and protect key locations. The emergency plan of a local museum was activated, leading to the safe evacuation of its most valuable artworks. In a dramatic turn, teams had to evacuate a church during a wedding ceremony, ensuring everyone’s safety. As fires reignited, ground teams, supported by aerial units, continued their efforts to contain and extinguish the blazes.
The intervention modules have been working relentlessly, day and night, in difficult conditions to contain the wildfires and prevent further spread. Their dedication on the ground has been critical in protecting the affected areas.
As the evening arrived, the official closing ceremony of ITA EU MODEX 2025 took place—a moment of celebration and reflection, allowing participants to build meaningful connections and lasting friendships.
A heartfelt thank you to our host, Direzione Generale Protezione Civile - Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, and to all the participants whose commitment made this exercise a true success.
