By Knowledge Network – Staff memberPublished on

Young people in Europe and Central Asia are invited to take part in the Youth Risk Communications Challenge, a project designed to empower them to address disaster risks using communication strategies.

Organised by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), UNICEF, and WHO Europe, this initiative is part of the 2024 Europe and Central Asia Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (ECARP-DRR), with a specific focus on engaging young individuals.

Objectives of the Youth Risk Communications Challenge:

Young individuals aged 15 24 are encouraged to submit proposals focusing on the theme: Participatory Communication Tools: Enhancing Understanding of Risks Among Vulnerable Communities. These proposed solutions can be applied nationally or internationally and should aim to raise awareness about risks while promoting changes, in behavior to reduce those risks.

Entry requirements

The competition is open to youth groups organisations, networks and schools in Europe and Central Asia. Teams should consist of 15 members between the ages of 15 and 24 with at least one team member over 18 in order to be eligible for travel assistance. Proposals will be assessed based on criteria such as youth leadership qualities, cost effectiveness, inclusivity (considering gender and youth sensitivity) promotion of methods and adherence to the Sendai Framework and EFDRR Roadmap for 2021 2030.

Proposals must be submitted in English through an online form, along with a supporting presentation (e.g., video or PowerPoint). The deadline for submissions is 13 September 2024

Recognition

The winners will be acknowledged at the Europe and Central Asia Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction in Budva Montenegro from November 6 8, 2024. The winning team will have a chance to present their solution at the event with travel grants, for participants aged between 18-24.

This competition provides an opportunity for young individuals to actively contribute to reducing the risks of disasters while enhancing their leadership and creative abilities. To learn more about developing communication tools, participants are advised to consult the UNDRR and BBC Media Action's guide on communication techniques.
