Multi-hazard early warning systems' global status

By Knowledge Network – Staff memberPublished on

A recently released UNDRR-WMO report assesses the current global status of multi-hazard early warning systems, against Target G of the Sendai Framework. It collects data officially reported by the Member States with data collected through a WMO survey.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the World Metereological organisation have recently released a report assessing the current global status of multi-hazard early warning systems.

The report identifies countries’ challenges and notes good practices in forecasting capabilities, early warning coverage, and systems to act on them. According to its findings, only less than half of the Least Developed Countries and only one-third of Small Island Developing States have a multi-hazard early warning system. These are the countries most impacted by climate disasters.

This report offers a substantive basis to inform actions in response to the UN Secretary-General’s call for “early warnings for all”, while making policy recommendations for the Mid-Term Review of the Sendai Framework.

Early warning systems have proven to be a concrete measure to avert and minimize losses and damages, while also reducing risk and enhancing preparedness and adaptation.
