NEAM‑COMMITMENT Activities in Greece: Advancing National and Local Tsunami Preparedness

Two key NEAM‑COMMITMENT activities brought together national and local stakeholders to strengthen tsunami preparedness in Greece.

30 March 2026: National Tsunami Inundation Map Workshop – Athens

Institutions from Greece, Italy, and Spain, together with national decision‑makers, convened to discuss common approaches to tsunami inundation mapping. The workshop supported the development of a coordinated national framework for hazard assessment and emergency preparedness, highlighting the importance of shared methodologies and cross‑country collaboration.

31 March 2026: Local Tsunami Inundation Map Workshop – Methoni

Local authorities and civil protection actors were introduced to the first preliminary tsunami hazard maps for the Methoni area. Participants examined how these maps can inform evacuation planning, civil protection actions, and community awareness. A field visit to potential evacuation routes and assembly areas enabled stakeholders to observe site‑specific challenges and relate scientific results to real‑world conditions. Scientists from Greece, Italy, and Spain contributed their expertise, enriching the technical discussions with international perspectives.

Organisation and Collaboration

These activities were co‑organised by the Hellenic National Tsunami Warning Center of the National Observatory of Athens, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, and the Municipality of Pylos‑Nestor.

Key Message

Across both workshops, a consistent message emerged: collaboration, shared knowledge, and science‑based tools are essential for building resilient and informed coastal communities.
