Stromboli, Italy – October 7, 2025 The NEAM-COMMITMENT project kicked off its highly anticipated multiple-hazard workshop today on the volcanic island of Stromboli, marking a significant step toward enhanced tsunami risk mitigation and emergency management in the NEAM region (North-Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean).

Organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), with support from the Municipality of Lipari and the Italian Department of Civil Protection, day 1 of the workshop brought together experts, local authorities, and civil protection agencies for a hands-on technical field trip across the island.

Led by Mauro Coltelli, Domenico Russo, and Cristina Roccella, participants explored key emergency infrastructure, including:

🚨 Escape routes designed for rapid evacuation in case of volcanic and/or tsunami threats

🧭 Assembly points for safe congregation during emergencies

This interactive experience is part of NEAM-COMMITMENT’s broader mission to pilot multiple-hazard evacuation methodologies in local sites in Italy and Greece. The initiative is funded under the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) and aligns with the UN Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme, reinforcing global efforts in disaster preparedness.
