Originally developed by the European School of Administration for staff of the EU institutions, the course Exploring the Key Themes of Diversity & Inclusion has been fully adapted to reflect the operational context and specific needs of civil protection and disaster management professionals. This adaptation process included the revision of content, visuals and terminology to ensure the course is both accessible and practically relevant for the wider UCPM community.
The self-paced e-course introduces participants to the core principles of Diversity and Inclusion, while inviting them to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviours in the workplace. A strong self-reflection thread runs throughout the course design, recognising self-awareness as a key pillar of inclusive professional practice.
Building knowledge and inclusive practice
The course supports participants in developing a shared understanding of what Diversity and Inclusion mean in everyday working environments within civil protection and disaster management. It also encourages professionals to strengthen their role in fostering welcoming and inclusive workplaces, based on empathy, respect for diversity and awareness of the impact of exclusion.
Course structure
The learning programme is organised into seven thematic modules, each addressing a specific dimension of Diversity and Inclusion:
- Belonging
- Identity
- Difference
- Diversity
- Inclusion
- Diversity & Inclusion Leadership
- Resources
Together, these modules provide a progressive learning pathway that moves from individual awareness to leadership and organisational responsibility.
Target audience and access
The course is aimed at civil protection and disaster management professionals and stakeholders across the UCPM network and beyond. It is offered by the European Commission and is now open for enrolment on the EU Academy.
By strengthening shared understanding and practical application of Diversity and Inclusion principles, the course contributes to more inclusive approaches across prevention, preparedness and response activities within the EU civil protection and disaster management community.
