New VERA Project Deliverable: Identifying Europe’s Vulnerable Cross-Border

By project VERA staffPublished on

The deliverable identifies cross-border European regions with a high potential for extreme weather, industrial, and nuclear hazards. By combining indices for natural and technological risks, VERA mapped vulnerable areas such as the Portugal-Spain, Belgium-Netherlands, and Switzerland-Germany borders, highlighting their susceptibility to wildfire, industrial, and nuclear risks.

Multi-hazard

Combined Hazard and People Vulnerability Indices

A Combined Hazard Index and People Vulnerability Index (PVI) was developed to prioritise regions based on hazard intensity and population vulnerability, especially focusing on high-risk age groups. Regions such as Milan-Aargau and Varese-Liège emerged as particularly high-risk for potential cross-border interventions under the VERA framework.
