The UN Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Kamal Kishore, spoke to TSF during the Civil Protection Forum in Brussels. He says that he believes that the 2017 fires in Portugal resulted in lessons learned across Europe. ‘Portugal is better prepared, with a greater focus on fire prevention”. Mr. Kishore added that the approach of the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre is more focused on information and mechanisms to prevent forest fires. As a lesson learned from the 2017 fires, this United Nations expert argues that prevention must be at the forefront of firefighting.
"Europe does more than any other region to reduce risks. Europe's approach is based on two things: integration, which brings together the capabilities of EU countries and their competitive advantages; and flexibility, which is iterative and avoids fixed plans. It is capable of responding to changing risk scenarios. So, I think Europe is doing the right things. Of course, there is much more to be done."
