True team spirit
Participants of the Union Mechanism Introduction course (UMI) in Bucharest, Romania, in July 2026 share their reflections.
How did the UMI course in Bucharest meet your expectations?
"The UMI course fully met my expectations by combining theoretical and practical knowledge of the European UCPM with valuable teamwork, enhancing both my understanding and the practical skills applicable to my professional activities.
My key takeaway was understanding the highly transversal and multidisciplinary nature of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, the crucial role of coordination in bringing together different expertise and actors for a coherent emergency response, and the value of a strong professional network. The course was very well structured and provided a good balance between theoretical and practical aspects. For future UMI courses, I would suggest including more case studies and short scenario-based simulations."
What was the most surprising insight you gained at the UMI in Bucharest?
"The course was much more comprehensive and informative than I had expected. Overall, it was very valuable for me to learn the UCPM tools, stakeholders and their roles, and deployment steps. In addition, it was important to understand how disaster management and civil protection are organized and implemented in the other participating countries.
Before the course started, I was quite nervous of the fact that since I am from a non-EU country, other participants might have a bit of a headstart. However, the learning atmosphere was very supportive and we all developed a true team spirit in our multinational training teams. The course was quite intensive and packed with content, spreading it out over one or two more days would have allowed for more group exercises and longer personal exchanges."
