VERA Kick Off Meeting

January 12th 2024

The VERA project recently commenced in Madrid, with its kickoff meeting held at METEOGRID's facilities. This project is a successor to the VESPRA initiative, which achieved significant milestones in the realm of cross-border disaster risk management. The VESPRA project developed a harmonized catalogue of vulnerable elements applicable across borders, created a platform for collecting vulnerability data at various scales, and devised a decision-making tool for four types of hazards: meteorological, industrial, nuclear, and forest fires. These tools were rigorously tested through real-world exercises on the Spanish-Portuguese border, demonstrating their practical applicability and effectiveness.

Building on the successes of VESPRA, the VERA project aims to enhance cross-border risk management mechanisms with a multi-risk approach. It plans to extend the platform's capabilities using existing data from European services such as Copernicus, Galileo, and JRC, and expand the analysis to include the entire Spanish-Portuguese and Spanish-French borders. The project, set to last 24 months, will focus on integrating new analyses and functionalities, with a preliminary version of the system expected within the first 10 months for evaluation and subsequent refinement. Real demonstrations will be conducted in-situ to validate the system's operation and usefulness in managing transboundary risks effectively.
