WORKSHOP on the Update of the National Tsunami Inundation Map-Spain

By project NEAM-COMMITMENT staffPublished on
Tsunami

CONCEPT NOTE

DATE: January 20, 2025.
PLACE: IGN – Royal Observatory of Madrid - ROM. (Calle Alfonso XII, 3).

This workshop is part of the NEAM-COMMITMENT project (NEAM Collaboration for Improved
Tsunami Risk Mitigation and Management). Specifically, it is aligned with its first objective: to
develop national tsunami flood maps in Spain, Greece and Cyprus using the methodology
applied for the preparation of evacuation maps in Italy, in order to achieve compatible maps
throughout the NEAM region.
The main objective of the workshop is to support decision-making by national decision-makers
regarding the updating of the national tsunami map, considering sources of seismic origin
through a probabilistic approach (S-PTHA). To this end, the workshop will be divided into two
parts: the first will present the project and the methodology applied; in the second, the results
obtained will be presented and a discussion session will be opened. This discussion will
complement the work developed with the contributions of the participating experts, thus
helping to facilitate decision-making on the design parameters and to guarantee the validity
and applicability of the maps generated.
