Description

Our operations are based on three assignments: rescue services, maritime surveillance and crisis preparedness.

To deliver according to our mission, we have designed a way of working we call the combination idea – this means that we combine our basic mission of being prepared for environmental rescue services with to independently and on behalf of other authorities carry out various operations related to emergency services, maritime surveillance, law enforcement and crisis preparedness to effectively use our resources and create added value for society. This way of working characterizes the entire planning and implementation of the business, as well as the units and competences we have to perform our job.

About the Coast Guard

The Coast Guard is a civilian government agency under the Department of Justice. On behalf of the Riksdag and the Government, we work with rescue services, maritime surveillance and are part of society's crisis preparedness in the maritime environment.

Our vision is a safe, clean and vibrant marine environment for all.

Rescue service

The Coast Guard is responsible for environmental rescue services at sea and assists other authorities with sea rescue services and other rescue services when the need arises.

Maritime surveillance

The Coast Guard is responsible for monitoring maritime environments and providing maritime information to other agencies. We conduct maritime surveillance and maintaining order in maritime traffic, as well as exercising supervision and control in fisheries, customs, borders, maritime traffic, hunting, nature conservation and environmental crime. The Coast Guard also prevents and investigates certain crimes in the maritime environment.

Emergency preparedness

The Coast Guard shall be prepared, together with other societal actors, to prevent, resist and act in the event of a societal disturbance. If Sweden is the victim of an armed attack, we should primarily focus on information that is important for the total defence.

The combination tank

In order to deliver according to our mission, we have designed a way of working we call the combination tank. This means that we combine our basic mission: to be prepared for environmental rescue services, with independently and on behalf of other authorities carrying out various operations linked to rescue services, maritime surveillance, law enforcement and crisis preparedness. We do this to create added value for society and efficiently use our resources. This way of working characterizes the entire planning and implementation of the business, as well as the units and competencies we have to carry out our job.

Collaboration authority

In order to fulfil our mission, we work closely with several different authorities and organisations both nationally and internationally. This makes the Coast Guard an effective resource for society and citizens.

Across the country

There are 21 coastal stations strategically located along the Coast of Sweden as well as in Lake Mälaren and Lake Vänern and an air coast station.

International missions

In line with developments in the Baltic Sea region and increased cooperation within the EU, the Coast Guard's international tasks are also increasing. In recent years, the Coast Guard has participated in several operations in the Mediterranean on behalf of the EU's joint border and coast guard agency Frontex.
