Description

After identifying a gap in the marine industry, the ‘Be Ready’ project set out to launch an environmental decision support system (EDSS) that models the most common sources of pollution. Its main objective is to improve trans-border and macro-regional cooperation in disaster preparedness. The project develops and tests innovative response technologies and methodologies to strengthen awareness-raising, public information, knowledge dissemination and education among Participating States. To carry out this aim, it concentrates on port areas and plans to test the effectiveness of the EDSS in two pilot sites: the Port of Tripoli and the Port of La Spezia. The oil and chemical industry and public authorities can access the Be Ready EDSS through a web app. In the app they can find potential spill points in certain areas, forecast trajectories of spill events, hazard and risk maps, and a user manual.

The marine environment is continuously and increasingly threatened by pollution derived from maritime accidents that frequently causes spills of dangerous substances. A great amount of work has been done to provide the EU Member States with common protocols, action plans and operational tools regarding either oil or HNS spill.

So far, however, a unified platform that covers the oil and HNS spills does not exist. This is the main gap that the Be Ready project aims to fill.
