Description
The ‘Cross-border risk assessment for increased prevention and preparedness in Europe’ (BORIS) project aims to establish harmonised cross-border approaches for assessing and communicating the multiple risks posed by seismic and hydro-meteorological hazards in the eastern Alps region. The project has the potential for cross-border impact in several countries participating in the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
BORIS aims to improve protection against cross-border disasters by developing a shared methodology for single and multi-risk assessment, facilitating evaluation of expected consequences for single natural hazards, as well as multi-risk impact comparison and ranking, in transboundary regions.
The project also involves establishing a platform for single and multi-risk assessment and representation, which facilitates storing and updating models, and documentation to represent damage and impact results using one harmonised approach.
The eastern Alps region (including the Italian/Slovenian/Austrian borders, as well as the region of Southeast Europe) is characterised by seismic activity, has repeatedly been hit by severe earthquakes, and is prone to hydro-meteorological hazards (e.g. floods and flash floods). These risks may be amplified due to the lack of a common prevention and preparedness framework, particularly in cross-border areas.
The BORIS methodology and platform, as well as multi-hazard risk assessment, are being applied practically at two cross-border sites in this region, allowing for evaluation of the data required, testing of procedures, effective cross-border seismic and flood risk assessment, as well as multi-risk comparison and ranking.
