Description
The SEED-FD project (Strengthening Extreme Events Detection for Floods and Droughts) is highly relevant to the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) as it addresses critical gaps in the EU's current disaster management capabilities.
SEED-FD enhances the hydrological simulation and early warning systems of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) through advanced modelling, innovative calibration strategies, and the integration of satellite-based and in-situ data. These improvements increase the accuracy and reliability of flood and drought forecasts worldwide, particularly in under-served regions of the Global South.
The project directly contributes to disaster prevention and response by:
- Making early warning systems more reliable to save lives and livelihoods,
- Developing new forecast products for floods and droughts to provide more precise and timely warnings,
- Strengthening the connection between scientific advancements and operational civil protection needs by ensuring that improved hydrological data and models are practical and actionable for decision-makers.
By strengthening Europe's capabilities in disaster preparedness, SEED-FD aligns with the UCPM’s mission and supports the EU's vision of ensuring that everyone worldwide is protected by early warning systems.
