International Firefighters Day on 4 May is a day to thank current and past firefighters for their contributions in keeping us safe.

ECHO has highlighted the story of Andriy, a firefighter in the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, near the border with Russia.

Heavy shelling and missile attacks in Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine have left streets and houses in Chernihiv heavily damaged or destroyed. Andriy and his colleagues are battling every day to keep the residents of Chernihiv safe from fires under the most challenging circumstances

“The war with Russia will end someday. But the war with fire will always continue,” Andriy says.
