Following a disaster, Italy activates the National Civil Protection Service to manage the emergency. The Italian National Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) is the core component of the Service and has a long tradition in interventions for the protection of cultural heritage.

This paper describes the activities of the NFRS during an emergency, particularly the procedures applied for damaged buildings. In conclusion, the paper shows the results achieved by applying the procedures in place to a church damaged by the 2016 Central Italy earthquake.
