Arctic REIHN tests radiological accident response at sea
The UCPM full-scale exercise scenario in Bodø, Norway, depicts an accident on a nuclear-powered cruise ship in the Arctic and its consequences for health and the marine environment.
The UCPM full-scale exercise Arctic REIHN is now underway in Norway, testing the scenario of what would happen if a nuclear driven vessel in coastal waters got into trouble in northern Norway.
A major nuclear or radiological accident in the Arctic would have consequences on both sea and land, as well as cross-border contamination. A massive local, regional, national and international response would be required, including mechanisms for alerting other nations and receiving international assistance.
Involving national and local authorities, emergency services and radiation and nuclear safety organisations from Norway and neighbouring countries, Arctic REIHN is putting systems to the test to be best prepared for a possible real accident.
