The NEAM-COMMITMENT project was recently presented at the 1st Planning Conference for the Full-Scale eXercise (FSX) of the DEMONAX DG-ECHO project, held in Cyprus, highlighting its objectives, methodologies, and the challenges it addresses in disaster preparedness. The joint participation of Greece (as the coordinator of NEAM-COMMITMENT) and Cyprus in both projects offers a valuable opportunity to foster synergies in disaster and emergency management, capacity building, and cross-regional knowledge sharing. This collaboration can strengthen preparedness and response strategies not only for tsunamis but also for a broader range of natural disasters.
Outputs from the NEAM-COMMITMENT project, such as national tsunami inundation maps, could support the identification of areas suitable for FSX deployment. Furthermore, evacuation planning—especially when developed with a multi-hazard approach at the local level—can serve as a foundational element for designing effective preparedness exercises.
This collaboration is a strong example of how preparedness and prevention projects like NEAM-COMMITMENT can provide a structured framework to support and inform FSX initiatives such as DEMONAX, particularly in addressing the complex challenges of disaster risk management.
