Description

The aim of the DEMONAX project is to strengthen the capacity of the Republic of Cyprus to effectively prepare for and respond to the statistically very likely occurrence of a large-scale earthquake event on the island, one which can severely disrupt the implementation of all societal functions and result in substantial human and financial losses. Moreover, Cyprus is situated at EU external borders in the middle of a very challenging region, a land of stability in the middle of a turbulent mega region, as it is evident from the ongoing crisis in Middle East. The strengthening of Cyprus capacity refers not only to the testing and improvement of existing response plans of the local administration, but also to the testing and improvement of the Republic’s ability to activate the Mechanism and to effectively carry out the Host Nation Support guidelines of the European Union for the incoming international support teams. In addition, the implementation of DEMONAX will provide the cooperating teams with the opportunity to conduct joint training activities, to share capacities and resources, and to exchange best practices on scientific support decision making, thus leading to the improvement of the cross-border cooperation procedures of the Mechanism.
